Inconceivable!
We need to do this given how fast AWS is continuing to grow; we will start to run low on IDs for certain EC2 and EBS resources within a year or so.
It is amazing to see how fast the transformation and growth is happening from datacenter to cloud. This change is not much of a technical challenge.
The new IDs will be the same format as existing IDs, but longer. The current ID format is a resource identifier followed by an 8-character string, and the new format will be the same resource identifier followed by a 17-character string.
We have already made the change to support the longer instance ids and look forward to the seamless change.
