In this series, we interview RedLine13 users. Janesh talks about what he likes best about load testing, biggest challenges and advice for someone new to load testing.
Why did you get into load testing?
I initially got into load testing because I recognized its critical role in ensuring the reliability and performance of software applications, a key aspect of software quality assurance.
How did you learn about load testing?
I learned about load testing during my early career in software testing and quality assurance. It became a crucial part of my work as i saw its impact on product quality. How long have you been load testing? I’ve been in load testing for over 15 years, gaining valuable experience and expertise.
How long have you been using RedLine13?
I’ve been using RedLine13 for approximately four years as it offers robust load testing capabilities that significantly enhance our testing processes.
What did you use before RedLine13?
Before RedLine13, we relied on JMeter’s inbuilt distributed testing feature, which often required more manual effort and was less user-friendly.
What is a big difference between RedLine13 and what you used before?
The significant difference is the user-friendly interface and scalability RedLine13 offers. It simplifies load testing setup and execution, allowing us to achieve more comprehensive results in less time.
What do you like best about load testing?
I appreciate how load testing helps uncover potential performance bottlenecks in applications, enabling us to address them and deliver a more reliable user experience proactively.
What is your biggest challenge?
My biggest challenge is staying ahead of evolving technologies and the ever-increasing complexity of modern applications, ensuring our load-testing methodologies remain effective.
What was the most rewarding load testing you did?
The most rewarding load testing experience was when our team successfully identified and mitigated performance issues prior to a major product launch, preventing potential downtime and loss of revenue. Also, simulating workloads with a huge throughput, client-side performance testing with WebDriver sampler, integrating JMeter with Groovy and crafting missing plugins like removing ramp-up/down test results automatically.
What was the toughest load testing?
The toughest load testing involved a mission-critical financial application where we had to simulate a massive user load while maintaining data integrity and security.
What do you like best about RedLine13?
I appreciate how RedLine13 streamlines load-testing processes with its cloud-based platform, making it easier for teams to collaborate, execute tests, and analyze results efficiently.
Have you ever presented somewhere about load testing?
Yes, i’ve had the opportunity to present on load testing methodologies and best practices at industry conferences, training and internal knowledge-sharing sessions.
What is your role and responsibilities?
As a software QA strategist, my role involves overseeing quality assurance strategies, leading teams, and ensuring the quality and reliability of software products. I’m also responsible for aligning QE practices with the organization’s strategic goals.
What do you do outside of work?
I enjoy walking, spending quality time with my family, and continuing to explore new developments in software testing and quality assurance.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting started with load testing?
In performance testing, recognizing the significance of the “5W” approach—Who, What, When, Where, and Why—is paramount. Learning a load testing tool is essential, but it’s only the “How” in the broader context. Effective performance testing hinges on clearly defining the “What” (specific objectives), “Why” (purpose and goals), “When” (timing and scenarios), “Where” (environment and conditions), and “Who” (stakeholders and teams involved). Neglecting these fundamental aspects in favour of tool proficiency alone can result in ineffective performance testing that falls short of addressing real-world challenges and requirements.
